How to Run a BOGO Promotion on Shopify

Table of contents: 6 sections

To run a BOGO promotion on Shopify, define which product triggers the offer, choose the qualifying free product, configure the promotion in Shopify or a suitable app, and test the cart with eligible and ineligible items. Check inventory, discount stacking, checkout messaging, and fulfillment before making the offer visible to shoppers.

Define the BOGO offer before configuring it

Write the promotion rules in plain language before opening the discount settings. Specify the qualifying product or collection, the item the customer receives, whether the free item must match the purchased item, and whether shoppers can repeat the offer in the same order. Clear eligibility rules prevent mismatches between storefront copy and checkout behavior.

Decide whether the promotion should apply to all customers or a defined segment. If the offer is limited, confirm how customers qualify and whether the restriction is enforced by the discount setup or by an app. Record exclusions for sale items, bundles, gift cards, or products with limited stock.

Choose between Shopify settings and a promotion app

Inspect Shopify's available discount options first. Native settings may cover a straightforward discount, but a BOGO offer can require product selection logic, automatic free item handling, quantity rules, or cart conditions that are not available in a basic setup. Check the exact cart behavior before publishing.

Use an app when the promotion needs more detailed qualification rules, automatic product addition, scheduling, campaign limits, or clearer controls for repeated purchases. Compare each app by testing its conditions, checkout compatibility, theme integration, reporting, and uninstall behavior. Avoid choosing from screenshots alone.

Configure the qualifying and reward products

Select the trigger product or collection carefully, then select the reward product or collection. Check variants, product status, inventory tracking, and selling plans. A customer who buys a qualifying variant should receive the intended reward variant, not an unavailable or unrelated item. Variant mapping is a common source of failed promotions.

Set the quantity rule explicitly. Decide whether the customer must add the reward item manually or whether the system adds it to the cart. If the reward is added automatically, test what happens when the customer removes it, changes its quantity, or adds another qualifying product.

Test the promotion in the cart and checkout

Test a qualifying product by itself, then test the same product with the reward item already in the cart. Confirm that the discount is applied only once when that is the intended rule and that the reward does not become free without the trigger product. Cart testing should include both the normal path and common customer mistakes.

Also test an excluded product, mixed qualifying and nonqualifying products, multiple qualifying quantities, variant changes, discount codes, and a returned or out of stock reward item. Check the order confirmation, fulfillment details, tax treatment, and inventory adjustment so the promotion works after payment, not only on the product page.

Publish the offer with operational safeguards

Add concise promotion copy to the relevant product pages, collection pages, cart, and campaign message. State what the customer must buy, what they receive, and any exclusions. Make the cart show the qualifying item and reward clearly. Accurate storefront copy reduces support requests caused by hidden conditions.

Set an end condition or a manual removal plan before launch. Monitor reward inventory and pause the promotion if the free product can no longer be fulfilled. Brief support and fulfillment staff on how the offer appears in orders, especially when the reward item is added automatically.

Measure results without losing margin control

After launch, inspect orders for missing rewards, unintended discounts, duplicate free items, and orders that combine the promotion with other incentives. Compare the promotion's product mix with ordinary orders and check whether the free item is being fulfilled correctly. Order level checks reveal configuration issues faster than headline sales totals.

Calculate the cost of the reward, packaging, shipping, and any app subscription before extending the campaign. If the offer attracts low value orders, tighten the qualifying collection or limit repeated rewards. Keep a record of the final settings so the same promotion can be rebuilt without relying on memory.
