How to set up automatic discounts on Shopify

Shopify's automatic discount feature lets merchants create discounts that apply without requiring customers to enter a code. Set up discount rules in your Shopify admin under Discounts, choose your trigger conditions like minimum cart value or customer tags, and Shopify applies the discount at checkout automatically.

Accessing the discount builder

Log into your Shopify admin and navigate to Marketing, then Discounts. Click Create discount in the top right corner. You will see two main options: Discount code and Automatic discount. Select Automatic discount to create a discount that applies without a code.

Setting up volume based discounts

Volume discounts encourage larger orders by rewarding customers who buy in bulk. In the discount builder, choose Volume discount under the Discount type section. Set your quantity thresholds and the percentage or fixed amount off you want to offer at each tier.

For example, you might configure your first tier to give customers 10% off when they purchase a specific quantity. Add additional tiers with higher quantities and higher discounts. Each tier represents a distinct discount level triggered automatically when the cart meets that quantity threshold.

Using customer segment discounts

Customer segment discounts apply based on who is checking out, not what they are buying. Create or select a customer segment in your Shopify admin, then return to your automatic discount and choose that segment as your condition. This works well for loyalty programs, VIP customers, or customer groups you have tagged.

To set this up, first verify your customer segments are created in your Shopify admin under Customers. Then in the automatic discount settings, select Apply discount to specific groups of customers and pick your segment from the list. The discount will only show at checkout for customers in that segment.

Setting purchase conditions

Besides volume or customer type, you can trigger discounts based on purchase conditions like minimum cart value, product collections, or specific product tags. In the discount builder, scroll to Conditions and add your trigger. For instance, you might offer free shipping on orders over a certain amount, or a discount on products in a specific collection.

Test each condition carefully. If you set a minimum cart value, add products to a test cart and verify the discount does not appear until you reach that threshold. If you use product tags, verify the tag is applied to the correct products in your product settings.

Scheduling discounts for campaigns

Automatic discounts can be scheduled to run for a specific time period, making them ideal for seasonal campaigns or flash promotions. In the discount builder, scroll to Active dates and set your start and end times. Shopify will turn the discount on and off automatically at those times, so you do not need to manually activate or deactivate it.

Testing before launch

Before publishing your automatic discount, test it in a development store or on a small portion of traffic. Add products to your cart and proceed to checkout to confirm the discount appears when it should. Check that the discount amount is correct and that the trigger conditions work as intended.

Use your Shopify admin to review the discount details one more time. Verify the discount applies to the right products, customers, or cart values. Save your work and set the discount status to Active only when you are confident it is configured correctly.

Monitoring performance

After you launch an automatic discount, monitor its performance in your Shopify admin. Under Discounts, you can view how many times the discount was used and the total value applied. Review these metrics weekly to understand which discount strategies drive the results you want.

If a discount is underperforming, consider adjusting the trigger condition, the discount amount, or the customer segment it targets. Small changes to purchase thresholds or discount percentages can significantly affect adoption and average order value.
